Story
Coconut trees (cocos nucifera) are palm trees which grow in tropical regions. Their geographical origins are unclear: the trees were spread by humans but also by the sea because the coconuts floated to new shores.
When fully ripe, the fruit, or coconuts, weigh almost 1kg. This takes between nine months and a year.
This coconut milk comes from Sri Lanka where coconut trees are grown on small farms which are certified as organic.
The coconuts are picked when they are ripe as this means there will be enough white meat (copra) inside. The coconuts are shelled in a small cooperative in Sri Lanka. The water and meat are collected to be washed, crushed, and macerated. The crushed parts are sieved to collect a liquid: coconut milk.
